Getting Googled – Part 2
Recently I was surfing “the Google” on “the Internets” looking for “the websites” that interested me and could help my business grow, (thank you Mr. Bush for those wonderful insights into the realm of cyberspace) when I came across these phrases by our web savvy President. Then I thought that since the former Vice-President created “the Internets” (technically it is a plural of networks – nontechnically it is a single phrase that is a description of the whole) and our current President uses “the Internets” by utilizing “the Google” map application to look at his ranch in Texas – maybe the two should get together and compare notes. They will probably find that they had the same script writer.
Well, enough of the comic relief. I will really leave that to Robin Williams.
This edition is about being “Googled”. But before we “get Googled” and in light of the recent faux pas with the name Google – I would like to take a moment to clarify the definition of what we are talking about so that there is no confusion in the future. We are referring to the following:
- Using Google search engine
- a.”to be Googled” or “getting Googled” – the act of being spidered and databased by Google
- b. someone who used Google and found your web site
- “Googling” – the act of using Google to search for another web site on the Internet
These are basically the terms we use and the definitions that we attribute to the search engine Google. We are not talking about surfing the Internet using any other search engine. If we do – we shall refer to that search engine by name, like “getting Yahooed” or something like that.
As a web site designer offering Internet marketing services, we do our best to offer the best advise on the strategy of being seen on the Internet. My second piece of constructive assistance for “getting Googled” is this:
Don’t Give Up!
This may sound like simple advice but ask the 80% of all new business start-ups who fail within the first year. There is nothing easy about those three little words. Yet, if it is your dream – then you must pursue it no matter what it takes. You will do the things you need to do and learn the things you need to change in order to be better at what you want to do.
In many cases, “getting Googled” is similar. Many people believe that if they put up a web site and after two or three months they don’t get much traffic and they can’t find their web site listed in the big “G” then the internet doesn’t work. It is no good and they just give up. They forget about their web site. They never tell anyone about it. They never put the web site address on their business cards and they never list it in their hard-copy advertising. If you don’t tell anyone about it – how do you expect to have any one find it?
Duh!
They have given up.
Or, the second type of person is the one who hires someone to help them to market their web site for one or two months and then believes that the world should be knocking down their doors. When that doesn’t happen? They give up! They believe that the Internet doesn’t work when the truth is – they have not worked the Internet.
These people are looking for easy answers and don’t want to work hard to get the results that they need.
If what I have heard rumored about Goggle to be true – then I applaud Google for their simple common sense.
In the age of fair competition you may find it hard to believe that a search engine may hinder the appearance of a new website. This is what is currently believed to be happening on more web servers today. Some programmers have viewed Google as uncomfortable to rank newer websites until they have proven their viability to exist for more than a period of “x” months.
This is know as the Google Sandbox. So in order to get listed in Google – You must preserver. You must show even Google database that you are in it for the long haul and not some fly-by-night internet business scam.
Some people think this sandbox is unfair – truthfully – get over it. Who said life was fair? It is not – so being fair or not is a mute point. It is their sand box. I believe that it is a great benefit to all those who want to take part in good, solid business practices. Weed out those who are going to quit early and give up because they are only in it with some “get rich quick” mentality. When I am doing business on the Internet, I want to know that they are going to be around for awhile. Don’t you? So one thing I look for in a company to do business with is a little longevity. If Google assists me by building that into their optimization procedures – I say: Thank you Google.
When I am consulting my clients about good Internet Marketing Techniques I want to know that that business is going to be around for awhile. If they are not committed for the longer haul – I don’t want to be their consultant. We only commit our company to businesses who are committed to success. It sounds like Google does the same.
So, if you find yourself taking a few months to get into the most popular search engine database listing and then getting rank – don’t despair – 80% of the people there before you will drop out of informational existence before your eyes – and then, your playing with those who want to be their and are committed to success.
In part 3 we will discuss a little more of the meat of “getting Google”. Actual, physical things you can do to your web site that make them search engine friendly and especially, Google friendly.
Until next time,
