Pigs for Kids
Supporting Families & Education
If you haven’t heard yet about “Stumble!” – here is a great site I stumbled on recently. It’s called pigsforkids.org. I was looking up information on pigs for our preschooler when this site came up. Cool! This young non-profit organization has developed a program to help families in Nicaragua to become self-sufficient. The great bonus: When “this little piggy” eventually goes to the market as a big fat pig, its proceeds not only support the family in their every day needs, but cover the cost to send a child to school.
We perceive the education of our children as a guaranteed, given right, but in many other countries this is still not so. The schooling we expect – so often without a second thought or gratitude – our children to receive for free, elsewhere is bought with a price. A price not everybody can afford. And in case we want to think ourselves so much better than “they”, just take a look back into our own, or other developed nations’ history, and child labor coupled with lack of education is not as far in the past as one might think.
A piglet only costs $ 20.00, less than the cost of dining out once, two movie tickets, or half a tank of gas. What any family of four can spend in a one time fast food spree at any McD’s here can provide a living for a family of four there. $ 20.00 can change a live, and give hope for the future. To see why pigs are ideal for this project, or to view a short clip about Pigs for Kids, visit http://pigsforkids.org/about.php.
We as a family has decided we want to get involved, as some things are truly worth “stumbling upon”.
